A lot of kids dream of becoming a World Champion athlete. For LAST CUP’s “The Champ” winning The World Series of Beer Pong is his last chance to achieve this dream and become a World Champion. We caught up with “The Champ” to chat about his first beer pong games, LAST CUP, and The World Series.

When and where did you play your first game of beer pong?
Not sure if it was my first individual, but had my first full nights of pong freshman year of college at my future fraternity house.

What did you do to get better?
Played a lot of one on one, we also played on small cups in college, which helped my game.

What is the best way to become a better beer pong player?
A softer shot is better than a faster shot. Very people can become great players with a hard shot. Changing your shot will be difficult and you’ll be worse at first, but it will pay dividends.

How do you hit the Last Cup?
You just have to realize it’s the same as any other cup. If I’m struggling I might visualize two cups behind it and pretend I’m shooting at a 3 rack.

Do you still play beer pong? Competitively?
Took a year off but I am currently readying myself to play in WSOBP V with Nick V (World Series of Beer Pong I champion) as my partner.

What do you do now?
I had a very difficult year health wise but have nearly recovered all the way back. I’m still focusing on getting all of my strength back and will look to restart my career path after that.

What are your goals for the future (beer pong or otherwise)?
Staying healthy

What was your reaction the first time you saw LAST CUP?
Thought it was really well done. They definitely cast me as the “serious” one but I thought the depiction was very fair.

Sometimes in sports, brains are more important than brawn. World Series of Beer Pong competitor Sean, for example crafted a computer program to track his hits and misses throughout his beer pong season, in hopes he could find the magic number that would make him a better player. We caught up with Sean to chat about LAST CUP, becoming a better beer pong player, and his new teammate.

When and where did you play your first game of beer pong?
My first game was back in 2002. A local band named Victory Twin used to throw house parties, and they had a table for beer pong in their basement.

My original teammate back then was actually my friend Shawn, and we continued to play with each other years later in the world series under team Shawn Squared.

How many cups did you hit? Did you win? How was your aim?
Sadly, I don’t remember that level of detail from all those years ago; I just know that I had a lot of fun, socialized, and met some cool people.

As far as aim.. the ping pong ball is so light, it took me a couple of years before I could even hit half of what I aimed for.

What did you do to get better?
Practice. Practice. Practice. I can honestly say I wouldn’t be the player I am today if not for the community we have here in MD. Being able to go out to tournaments on a regular basis was essential for keeping my competitive spirit alive.

When did you get the idea to go to the WSOBP?
We were already having tournaments here in MD before the World Series came around, so naturally news traveled fast! It was very easy to make the transition from local to national tournaments.

What is the best way to become a better beer pong player?
Breathe out as you throw, follow through, and confidently visualize the ball going into a specific cup.

How do you hit the Last Cup?
Like the fist of an angry god! In all seriousness, this is a very mental game, and if there is any doubt or guess work in your throw then you’ve already missed.

Do you still play beer pong? Competitively?
I still play beer pong competitively, and I’ve continued to get better every year. Of course I still miss from time to time, so there’s always room for improvement.

What do you do now?
I’m a software engineer. The past couple of years I’ve been working predominately with Java and Flex.

What are your goals for the future (beer pong or otherwise)?
I have a new World Series partner this year for the first time, (Austin Lanham – founder of MDBeerPong) and I am ready to go back to Vegas and take down the national title! Look for team “Projectile Dysfunction”.

What was your reaction the first time you saw Last Cup?
I loved it, and I was relieved to see how great of a job Dan Lindsey did with the film! It’s truly a great piece of work.

Are you going to the WSOBP V?
FTW! (for the win).

As a World Series of Beer Pong vet with a rookie partner, perhaps no competitor at The World Series of Beer Pong II was depended on more to hit the Last Cup. We caught up with the Iceman to chat about his first beer pong game, how to be a better player, and his possible retirement from the sport.

When and where did you play your first game of beer pong?

It was in 2003 when I first started working at UW-Milwaukee. My co-workers introduced me to the game and invited me to join the newly formed Cramer House Beer Pong League (CHBPL).

How many cups did you hit? Did you win? How was your aim?

I don’t remember my first game, but in my first season of the league (which was season 2) my partner and I went 1-5 and I had a shooting percentage of 39.13% with 72 cups made over 15 games played. The stats speak for themselves, but my first “professional” season of beer pong was memorable for reasons other than my performance on the table.

What did you do to get better?

The same thing that you in any other sport – practice, practice, practice. I can’t count how many nights we sat around just shooting at water cups in order to refine and be able to duplicate the same shot technique every single time you step up to the table.

When did you get the idea to go to the WSOBP?

The “Godfather” of our League, Brodey Callies, found out about it while surfing the internet. We signed up without knowing much about it, and went out there with no expectations. In year 1, Milwaukee sent 5 out of the 82 total teams, and all of us finished in the top half with my team finishing in the top 10. The first WSoBP was one of the greatest events of my life, and I will always look back on it with fond memories, and be thankful that I attended that event.

What is the best way to become a better beer pong player?

The best way to improve as a beer pong player is to play competitively. Practice does make perfect, but there are so many aspects (distractions, opponents shooting percentage, venue size, lighting, etc.) that you can not practice at home. When you play against others, you have to react to the situations inside of the game. Once that adrenaline from the competition starts flowing, you almost settle down and stop thinking and let your natural instincts take over.

How do you hit the Last Cup?

If you’ve seen the movie “The Legend of Baggar Vance” then you can you can identify with my approach. I take a deep breath, focus on the Last Cup, and tune out all of the distractions around me. I don’t see my opponents on the other side of the table. Nor do I see the people on the sidelines watching the game. I just see that Last Cup. Everyone has a shot that is unique. It is theirs and theirs only. You just have to trust yourself and stop thinking about hitting the Last Cup and just do it. This is where having a strong mental focus comes into play. The ability to hit Last Cup separates the winners from the losers.

Do you still play beer pong? Competitively?

Our league (the CHBPL) has ended, with my partner Joey Kanz and I winning the championship in season 12. I still play in WSoBP satellite tournaments, but without a weekly league to play in, I don’t play nearly as much as I used to. I’m lucky if I play once a week.

What do you do now?

I still work at Miller Park, and next year I will be starting my 9th year. I just wish that the Brewers played year round so that I could quit my day job where I work for a travel company. Otherwise I’m just busy livin’ the dream.

What are your goals for the future (beer pong or otherwise)?

I would love to keep playing competitively, but I understand that my career as a beer pong player is all but over. Without being able to (or having the time to) play on a regular basis, I can no longer compete with younger (college-aged) people who have the time that I once did to dedicate to playing beer pong. I will still play because I love the game,

What was your reaction the first time you saw LAST CUP?

I was sent a screener copy when the final cut was completed, and I locked myself in my room to watch it. I didn’t recall what I had said during filming, so I was a little wary of how my comments and actions would portray me as in the film. But the filmmakers did an excellent job of capturing the reality of the event, and there is nothing I say or do that is inaccurate. I was so pleased with the final outcome of LAST CUP, that as soon as the credits rolled, I immediately rewatched the film. I have seen it literally over 100 times, and I still love it every single time.

Are you going to the WSOBP V?

WSOBP V will be my fifth World Series of Beer Pong, and unless anything changes before now and January 2011, it will be my last. Since I am incredibly busy these days between work, family and my website that I run (www.pookon.com), beer pong has unfortunately fallen low on my list of priorities. I refuse to use the “R” word (retire) because I don’t think I will ever stop playing the game. Every time I feel like giving it up, I have an amazing game where I shoot lights out, then I remember just how fun beer pong is. And that is true beauty of this sport. You may think about giving up on beer pong, but beer pong will never give up on you.
