Director’s Statement

“It’s a sport. It just happens to involve alcohol.” If I had heard these words two years ago, I would have assumed the person talking was kidding or out of his mind. How could a sport involve alcohol? Two years and hundreds of hours of footage later, I find truer words have never been spoken. It was in the players’ earnestness, that I found the direction for this film. When we began this process, I figured anyone who would devote real time and energy to being good at beer pong must not have a lot going for them in life. But soon I was introduced to lawyers, computer programmers, investment bankers and an astonishing number of rocket scientists, who all were obsessed with the same thing, beer pong. They practice, they strategize and in one case they build computer programs designed to analyze their statistical performance over several years.

It was clear to me that for this film to work I needed to treat the subject matter as seriously as they did. It was with this sincerity that I approached the four main characters and in doing so was able to discover some interesting similarities between them. For the first time in their collective lives these four individuals had found something that they were recognized as being one of the best at. As Jamie “The Champ” Clouser says in the film “Growing up you play basketball, you play baseball, you play other sports and you always dream of going to the NBA and being the best in the world at something and for 99.9% of us, you realize at some point that that is never going to happen.” For them beer pong is their “sport” and they want (and in some respects need) to prove just how great they are.

It can be safely said that this film was not made to change the world and it
was never intended to teach a lesson. But hopefully, among the laughs and
lightheartedness, audiences will come to agree that beer pong is a sport…it just happens to involve alcohol.
